CHRIS NIEDLAND

Beauty Art Gallery is excited to present new work from Chris Niedland. Niedland’s paintings project bold color harmonies, so it’s not surprising to learn he paints while listening to a wide array of music. Synchromism, is an art movement dating to the 1920s. It is based on the idea that color and sound are similar phenomena and that the colors in a painting can be orchestrated in the same harmonious way that a composer arranges notes in a symphony.

“I have listened to music while creating artwork since I was very young. It wasn’t until attending MOMA’s Inventing Abstraction exhibit last fall, that I finally found a name for what I was doing – synchromism,” said Niedland.

Following is a glimpse of some of Niedland’s new works.

Chris Niedland is a self-taught artist, painting professionally since 1996. After painting landscapes, his work evolved into a style that seemed much more fulfilling to him. He paints what he hears. Niedland has “Synesthesia”. When he hears music, he sees color. He paints to a variety of music from rock and jazz to classical and electronic. He continually looks for new music, much as he seeks to create the perfect color. “I use the music to get myself into a trance-like state. Then I paint quickly, improvising, like a jazz musician does with music.” His work has been featured in exhibits throughout the midAtlantic states. More than 300 Niedland paintings reside in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and 14 countries.
